It dates back to the Heian period and was used in battles to penetrate and pierce through the armor of the opponent more efficiently. Tanto has also been utilized for slashing, it has highly effective in close-quarter combat. Women would sometimes carry a tanto concealed in their sash or obi for self-defense.We offer traditionally made Japanese Tanto in all sizes and shapes.
